Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has given the MCU another group of heroes: The Midnight Angels. But how did these warriors of justice come to be? Well they come out DOOMWAR #5 in 2010. However, the film image is slightly different from what happens in Wakanda forever. For starters, their formation as an elite strike force comes from Doctor Doom attacking Wakanda instead of Namor. Essentially, the Angels are the Black Panther version of X-Force. Some missions cannot be seen as coming from the nation and instead require a covert approach. Inside come Ayo, Aneka and their counterparts. Interestingly, Okoye is one of the main protagonists as Dora Milaje in the comics. They make their move when Aneka defies and orders and is locked up. For readers who are digging that action and want to see more, check out Black Panther World of Wakanda: Dawn of the Midnight Angels by Roxane Gay and Ta-Nehisi Coates is highly recommended.
The author actually spoke with Weekly entertainment about that series and delighted to be able to advance the mythology of the Dora. “Historically, the Dora Milaje have loyally and without question served the Black Panther,” Gay said of her strip. “But due to a series of events culminating in Black Panther’s current arc, the Dora Milaje are questioning their loyalty and their mission. World of Wakanda watches this evolution emerge… I like the idea of an elite unit of bodyguards made up entirely of women who can take care of themselves and the people they need to protect. It’s such a compelling role reversal.”
How are the Dora coping with T’Challa’s death?
Gurira spoke to The AV club about her character’s mindset on the way to Wakanda Forever. It appears to be a transition period not only for the nation of Wakanda, but also for its protectors. Okoye has been so involved in her work as a general that she probably didn’t have time to grieve the king too.
“Okoye considers her role very, very essential to the nation and takes her responsibility so seriously,” Gurira told the outlet when asked about her mindset in this film. In her mind she carries the nation on her shoulders. She has to protect it. She must protect the members of the royal family who remain. She has to keep it safe. Wakanda is considered compromised due to the loss of Black Panther… so there is a lot she carries on her shoulders regardless of whether there is a Black Panther or not.”
