Call of Duty: War Zone 2 may hold clues to the next Call of Duty: Black Ops game. The Call of Duty series has been running for 20 years now and as a result the series has evolved dramatically many, many times over. It all started in World War II before eventually moving on to dramatizations of modern warfare, and then it took a turn for the worse with the Black Ops series to show some of the most conspiracy-driven eras of politics, like the Cold War, and much more. We’ve been to the past, present, and even the distant future, but the series has yet to be knocked off its pedestal. Still, it’s clear that the Modern Warfare and Black Ops games are the fan-favorite franchises of the long-running Call of Duty series, and it looks like Activision will be leaning on that going forward.

Earlier today, a new blog post revealed a brand new Call of Duty: War Zone 2 map set on an Asia Pacific island. At the moment the map is not playable, but will be later this month. However, the blog post contains all kinds of nuggets of information about the map, including how it could tie in with a future Call of Duty game. As spotted by MavriqGG on Twitter, a blurb on the map’s origins suggests it could potentially be related to the next Black Ops game which is rumored to be set at least partly in the 1990s and possibly around the Gulf War turns. “Originally planned as a resort destination, development of Ashika Island was halted in the mid-1990s due to [[REDACTED]]and the excellent work of [[REDACTED]], but in public the reasons remain secret. Since then, travel to and from the island has been severely restricted.”

In a normal year, this new Black Ops game would probably be out in October or November. However, rumors suggest that Activision will skip a year and not have a brand new mainline Call of Duty game this fall. This is yet to be confirmed, so this could change, but the most reputable rumors suggest that the next Black Ops game will be released in 2024. That said, if the new War zone 2 map is starting to plant seeds for the future, it’s probably going to be a while before it makes any sense at all.
