Wakanda Forever Producer reveals if there were other options to replace T’Challa

After Chadwick Boseman passed away in 2020, Marvel Studios quickly decided not to recast T’Challa’s character. Instead, Ryan Coogler and the filmmakers behind it Black Panther: Wakanda Forever chose to use the film as a tribute to the late actor, with his character dying of illness in the sequel. As trailers and marketing materials for the movie have now confirmed, Shuri (Letitia Wright) has become the new Black Panther after she managed to synthetically recreate the heart-shaped herb.

Black Panther producer Nate Moore says Shuri was ultimately the only choice for the mantle given the script and story at hand.

“It was the only conversation we had. We’re aware of online conversations, but I’m also a huge comics fan. When you think about it from the publishing house, it’s kind of inevitable,” Moore said in a recent stop with Yahoo!. “If you think about it narratively with the story we told, [Shuri] has been most affected by the death of T’Challa. She may be the only one who has the tools to bring back the heart-shaped herb.”

Then the filmmaker added that he felt fan calls to cast someone else in the role were misleading.

“From a purer point of view, I think it’s really the only choice. Calling for M’Baku or Okyoe or Nakia was like throwing darts at a dartboard to me,” added Moore. “Shuri’s transition from where she starts to where she ends in this movie tells the story of why she should be Black Panther.”

Now in theaters, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever follows Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett), Shuri (Letitia Wright), M’Baku (Winston Duke), Okoye (Danai Gurira) and the Dora Milaje (including Florence Kasumba) as they fight to protect their nation from intervening world powers in the wake of King T’Challa’s death. As the Wakandans strive to embrace their next chapter, the heroes must band together with the help of War Dog Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o) and Everett Ross (Martin Freeman) and blaze a new trail for the kingdom of Wakanda. It remains to be seen where the Midnight Angels tie into the story.

Tenoch Huerta is introduced as Namor, the king of a hidden undersea nation, and the film also stars Dominique Thorne, Michaela Coel, Mabel Cadena and Alex Livanalli.
