Toyota GR Yaris Sebastien Ogier and Kalle Rovanpera Rally Edition concepts unveiled

Toyota has unveiled two special editions of the GR Yaris named after two of its World Rally Championship drivers. However, it is unclear if they are planned for Australia.

Two special edition versions of the Toyota GR Yaris hot hatchback were unveiled to celebrate the company’s victory in last year’s World Rally Championship (WRC).

The GR Yaris models – the Kalle Rovanperä Edition and the Sébastien Ogier Edition – are named after two of the Japanese car giant’s WRC drivers who led Toyota to its second consecutive World Rally Championship title and made Rovanperä the youngest Drivers’ Champion in WRC history .

The two special editions are branded as concepts for now, but are hinted to be previews of future limited edition models. Toyota says that “the release date and vehicle details of this model will be released in the future.”

It’s unclear if both models – based on the locally sold GR Yaris Rallye, or “RZ High Performance” as it’s known in Japan – will be offered in Australia, or if they will be exclusive to Japan. drive has reached out to the company for comment.

The Kalle Rovanperä Edition is the more radical of the two, with a red and white racing livery inspired by Toyota’s WRC race cars, the rear wing of last year’s track-focused GRMN Yaris edition, a black front splitter, red brake calipers and gloss black 18 -inch forged alloy wheels.

Meanwhile, the Sébastien Ogier Edition sports matte gray paintwork, black decals on the doors and blue brake calipers – plus a smaller rear spoiler than the Kalle Rovanperä Edition and no front splitter.

Inside, each car has contrast stitching inspired by the flag of each driving nation – blue and silver for Finnish driver Rovanperä and blue, white and red for French ace Ogier – while each car has a special buildplate that represents each car’s meaning acknowledgments, and a new all-wheel drive mode dial.

Both cars inherit engine tuning from the supercharged GRMN Yaris production special edition, boosting performance 1.6 liter turbocharged three-cylinder to exits from 200 kW and 390 Nm – 20 Nm higher.

Toyota says: “For those who have signed a contract for the same model, we are considering putting the proof on the WRC competition car as a partner, fighting together in the WRC and offering the opportunity to compete with Sébastien Ogier and Kalle Rovanperä speak.”

It’s unclear exactly what that will entail, but during the unveiling of the cars, Toyota Gazoo Racing boss Koji Sato spoke of “a special experience” for buyers of the special editions.

The launch date and final specifications for the production versions of the Toyota GR Yaris Kalle Rovanperä and Sébastien Ogier Edition concepts are yet to be confirmed.
