Avatar: the way of the water was, according to James Cameron, “the worst business case in movie history”. In a recent GK interview, the director explained how much the film would have to bring in to break even. $2 billion is a staggering number to even think about, but Cameron said, “You have to be the third or fourth highest-grossing movie in history.” That’s the bar to just break even. It’s a wild concept to contemplate on any level. But if the projects have been in development since 2013, that’s what you get. During the conversation, the director showed a single effects shot that had been edited 405 times. This level of detail is quite concerning, and also a testament to how much power has been thrown into this film.
James Cameron has spoken out about Creative Control
Elsewhere in the interview, Cameron shared a story about an executive trying to suggest some changes. Apparently the 20th Century Fox decision maker suggested we do it avatar shorter and that earned him a quick exit from the office with some swearing for the record. It’s hugely entertaining.
“I said something I’ve never said to anyone else in the company,” Cameron told the outlet GK. “‘I think this movie is going to make all the damn money. And when it does, it’ll be too late to love the movie. The time for you to love the movie is today. So I’m asking you don’t want to say something you don’t feel, but just know that I will always know that no matter how complimentary you are about the movie in the future when it makes all the money.'”
He added: “And that’s exactly what I said, in all caps, ‘ALL THE MONEY’, not part of the money, all the damn money. I said, ‘You can’t come back to me and compliment the movie or come over and say, “Look what we’ve done together.” You can’t do that.’ At that point, that particular studio manager freaked out and went over to me. And I told him to get the hell out of my office. And that’s where it stayed.”
Here is the description of the huge movie event: “Avatar: The Way of Water”, set more than ten years after the events of the first movie, begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri and their children ), the troubles that haunt them, the efforts they make to keep each other safe, the struggles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure. The movie stars, directed by James Cameron and produced by Cameron and Jon Landau , are Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Cliff Curtis, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Edie Falco, Jemaine Clement and Kate Winslet.”
