The Walking Dead: Dead City details revealed

Warning: This story contains spoilers for The Walking Dead series finale. Keep your friends close and your enemies closer – but don’t at close to. Sunday’s series finale from The living Deadtitled “Rest in Peace,” ended the season-long vendetta between foes turned allies Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). After Negan apologized years earlier for killing Glenn (Steven Yeun), Maggie realized she could never forgive the man who killed her husband: “When I look at you, all I see is that bat coming down on his head … So I can’t forgive you. Even though I’m so thankful that you saved my son. Even though I know you’re trying. I’m trying too. Because I don’t want to hate you anymore.”

After Maggie said that Negan and his pregnant wife Annie (Medina Senghore) were welcome to stay with the Commonwealth, a one-year time jump revealed that Negan had left the communities behind. When we see Maggie and Negan next time The Walking Dead: Dead Citytwo more years will have passed, leaving the spin-off three years out since the old rivals last saw each other The living Dead.

“I think this spin-off will take place a few years after the movie Walking dead finale, and here’s the problem with those few years — we don’t see what happens to these characters,” Morgan shared deadline. “Negan has a chance to fall back into his old ways in these missing years. He’s a creature of habit and he knows how to survive.”

Morgan continued, “When he was with our group, there was another way to survive, and he tried to adapt to those ways. I worry whatever happens in these two years away from our group, whatever he will become and who he will become.” And so, if he and Maggie are back together, chances are Negan isn’t who we see when we leave him here on the show. I think chances are he won’t be that guy anymore because he adapts to his environment and things are fucking rough. He goes back to old habits. ”

Negan earned trust when he risked his life earlier in Season 11 to save Maggie and Glenn’s son, Hershel Rhee (Kien Michael Spiller). But as Maggie told him in the finale, it’s not enough to ever forgive Negan.

How or why Maggie and Negan are going to New York in Dead city has yet to be revealed. Life in the big city means new survivors, new terrain and new dangers – and a new but different Maggie and Negan.

“These characters are going to have a hard time getting along, which is why I wanted to do it Dead city by the way so much. I just found it fascinating that you have two characters that sort of hate each other and have to find a way to work together,” said Morgan. The living Dead of them having to work together, and we saw how mean they were and how small they were. And so, I think Dead city is an opportunity to take that to N grade and it will be very interesting to see.”

Cohan added: “It’s so cool, I have to be honest with you. I mean it’s just such a sense of renewal even after doing this for so long when we have to physically and emotionally enter this new territory with the depth we can do.”

Previously titled Island of the Dead, the Maggie and Negan spinoff finds the two characters “traveling to a post-apocalyptic Manhattan cut off from the mainland long ago,” according to AMC’s synopsis. “The crumbling city is filled with the dead and residents who have made New York City their own world full of anarchy, danger, beauty and terror.”
