Ford’s next high-performance electric concept car is expected to be based on the F-150 Lightning pickup.

The Ford F-150 Lightning is being tipped as the US auto giant’s next high-performance electric concept car – but don’t expect it to hit showrooms any time soon.

While Ford’s media statement didn’t highlight the F-150 Lightning or any details about the project, the automaker’s previous electric car concepts suggest the high-performance pickup will share only a handful of parts with the production vehicle.

Launched in June 2022, the Ford Electric SuperVan featured larger, more aerodynamic body panels compared to the road van, while the single 160 kW electric motor was replaced with four high-performance motors capable of producing up to 1471 kW.

All three Ford Performance concepts were designed to showcase Ford’s electric car technology, but it’s not clear why Ford would need to promote the F-150 Lightning given the pickup’s already high demand in the US.

In addition to the long delays, potential Ford F-150 Lightning customers in the US have been hit with numerous price increases.

The most recent price increase in December 2022 has meant that the electric pick-up is now available from US$55,974 (AU$80,770) – or 40 per cent more than its original starting price of US$39,974 (AU$57,680). ), announced in May 2021.

As reported in September 2022, Ford Australia has opened the door to sales of the F-150 Lightning electric pick-up truck in local showrooms – assuming the regular F-150 is a sales hit when it arrives later this year.
