The Grammys reveal video game score nominations, but there’s a strange catch

The Grammys have announced the nominations for their brand new game-focused category: “Best Score Soundtrack for Video Games and Other Interactive Media”. It’s not a catchy name at all, but it’s the first time the Grammys have properly acknowledged the medium. Video games have been nominated for a Grammy in the past, but they’ve never had their own category. It’s a pretty special shot, and one that will likely only serve to bring the industry more and more serious recognition. While The Game Awards exist and some other awards shows feature video games in various capacities, the Grammys are one of the most prestigious awards shows out there, especially when it comes to music.

That said, the Grammys have announced the nominees for “Best Score Soundtrack for Video Games and Other Interactive Media.” However, there is a bit of an odd catch. Among the nominees are largely only games from 2021 and a Assassin’s Creed Valhalla DLC from March 2022, i.e. games that would otherwise probably get nominations like War god Ragnarok probably won’t qualify until next year. To be eligible for this year’s Grammys, nominees must be released between Friday, October 1, 2021 and Friday, September 30, 2022. Either way, you can see the nominations below.

Best Score Soundtrack for video games and other interactive media

Composer(s) award for an original score created specifically for or in addition to video games and other interactive media.

Aliens: Fireteam Elite
Austin Wintory, composer

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla: Dawn Of Ragnarok
Stephanie Economou, composer

Call Of Duty®: Vanguard
Bear McCreary, composer

Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy
Richard Jacques, composer

Old World
Christopher Tin, composer

It remains to be seen what score the Grammy will land, but there are some solid contenders here. More great games will almost certainly be nominated in next year’s category, as 2022 has been a fantastic year for games and some truly wonderful soundtracks have been included. You can also check out The Game Awards nominees to see what that show has nominated for Best Score and Music.
