Teasing Idris Elba and Netflix Luther: The Fallen Sun with a brand new clip on social media. Both the star of the movie and the company wanted fans to know Luther will be returning home in March this year. Elba’s post also gives a release date for a theatrical run that hits theaters on February 24. A few weeks later, on March 10, you can stream it on Netflix. As the Detective Superintendent steps out of the shadows for another go-around, you can almost hear the viewers at home cheering. It’s been a long time since people got a chance to catch up with Elba’s beloved BBC character. Series 5 seems like an eternity ago. But when Netflix entered the picture as a partner for more stories, both the broadcaster and the star were absolutely willing to tell more stories.

Not too long ago, the actor sat down with Jess Cagle on SiriusXM to talk about fallen sun. In their chat, he teased that longtime fans should be especially happy with the new movie. Things get wilder than ever during the Luther movie, and that will be something that viewers old and new will thoroughly enjoy.

“If you watched the last season, it picks up after that. But for a new audience that hasn’t seen it, I think the movie is, it’s a whole story, so even if you don’t know where Luther, who he is or whatever, whatever about him, the movie is trying to be whole for a new audience,” Elba revealed. “We just finished filming, about three weeks ago. It was a grim shoot. Oh my God. It’s all fun and games while I’m reading the script. I’m like, “And then what does he do? Oh wow, this is incredible,” and then I actually do it. I find myself freezing in a dark cave or something. No spoilers.”

How happy is Elba to be back in the saddle?

At the 2021 BAFTA Awards, the series star was adamant about getting this project done. “I’ve maintained that I’d like to see it made into a movie, and that’s where I think we’re going — a movie,” Elba chuckled. “And I’m looking forward to making that happen. It’s happening. With film, the sky’s the limit. You can be a little bolder with the storylines. And a little more international, and a little more on the scale. But John Luther will always be John Luther.”

As more fans inquired about the BBC movie Elba could only give them a small taste of the overall plot, “has all the makings to rehash those classic ’90s movies like Seven and Along Came A Spider and I think that’s what what we’d like to try is use that as a blueprint to create it. It’ll be more murder, more Volvos, more scowl Luther. Essentially, we just want to try and take it to a much larger remit and scale and maybe international as well. “
