Netflix’s upcoming movie Luther: The Fallen Sun received a surprising assessment. That has been revealed Luther: The Fallen Sun is rated “R for disturbing/violent content, language and any sexual material.”
Luther always has a toe dipped in the deepest, darkest ends of the crime thriller genre. The series stars Idris Elba as DCI John Luther, one of the more skilled profilers and detectives in the London police force. Luther’s specialization (obsession?) is tracking down the worst serial killers plaguing the streets of London and bringing them to justice (or making sure they never kill again). Luther is so devoted to his profession that it costs him everything in his personal life – friends, colleagues, lovers… often fatally. As if that wasn’t complicated enough, Luther’s only thriving personal connection turns out to be with one of the worst-running serial killers, Alice Morgan (Ruth Wilson).
Luther creator Neil Cross (The Mosquito Coast) really helped differentiate Luther from so many other crime drama investigative procedurals by showing dark and terrifying sequences of sadistic serial killers stalking, approaching and/or murdering their victims, between scenes of Luther tracking them down. Certain killers have even come back to attack Luther and those close to him, resulting in some pretty hard underbelly from key supporting characters.
That’s all to say: Luther: The Fallen Sun it sounds like it will lean heavily on the core appeal of the series, unencumbered by TV broadcast restrictions imposed by BBC One and instead go with the more hardcore allowances of a film’s R rating.
Luther Season 5 ended with John Luther in his tightest spot ever. Alice Morgan left Luther stranded between the worlds of crime and law by murdering the son of London’s biggest gangster, George Cornelius (Patrick Malahide), as well as Luther’s detective colleague and love interest, Catherine Halliday. Everything that Luther used to define himself as a moral representative of righteousness has been taken away…
“If you watched the last season, it picks up after that. But for a new audience that hasn’t seen it, I think the movie is, it’s a whole story, so even if you don’t know where Luther, who he is or whatever, whatever about him, the movie is trying to be whole for a new audience,” explained Idris Elba an interview. “We just finished filming, about three weeks ago. It was a grim shoot. Oh my god. It’s all fun and games while I’m reading the script. I’m like, ‘And then what does he do? Oh wow, this is unbelievable,” and then I actually do. I find myself freezing in a dark cave or something. No spoilers.”
Luther: The Fallen Sun plays Andy Serkis (Star Wars: Andor, Lord of the Rings) and Cynthia Erivo (Bad times in El Royale, Harriet). Erivo plays a police detective who becomes “Luther’s nemesis”; Serkis will play “the criminal villain of the story”, which will presumably be yet another sadistic serial killer.
