DC releases a deluxe edition of the highly anticipated Batman/Spawn crosswalk. The two iconic heroes reunited for last year Batman/Spawn #1 by legendary creators Todd McFarlane and Greg Capullo, two individuals well acquainted with those characters. Of course, Todd McFarlane created Spawn after leaving Marvel and helping form Image Comics, while Greg Capullo teamed up with Scott Snyder and McFarlane on multi-year, fan-favorite runs on both Batman and spawnrespectively. Batman/Spawn was officially announced at San Diego Comic-Con last summer, and with the 48-page one-shot now available, we’ve got our first look at the cover of the deluxe edition that goes on sale April 4.
ComicBook.com can exclusively reveal the cover art for Batman/Spawn: The Deluxe Edition. This special edition includes not only the recent Todd McFarlane and Greg Capullo crossover, but also the original 1990s crossovers between the characters: Spawn/Batman by Frank Miller and Todd McFarlane and Batman/Spawn: War Fiend #1 by legendary Batman writers and artists Doug Moench, Chuck Dixon, Alan Grant and Klaus Janson. Batman/Spawn: The Deluxe Edition will feature Greg Capullo’s pencils for Batman/Spawn #1, Klaus Janson’s Inking Batman/Spawn: War Fienda collection of cover variants for retailers and much more.
“We had the first one that Frank Miller and I did, it did pretty well. Years later, we announced another one that I was going to do and draw Greg Capullo,” McFarlane previously told ComicBook.com in 2017 of another Batman & Spawn crossover. “Then Greg becomes the preeminent Batman artist in recent years, so we were a little bit ahead of the curb. Maybe we’ll revive that when the time is right. I think both characters fit together visually other, and I think there’s enough character differences that it’s not just the same guy in a different suit. The story I told them was about how all the contradictions – character flaws if you will. Hopefully one day I can find an opening there to do that myself.”
Batman/Spawn released a slew of different covers from legendary artists such as Jim Lee, Chief Creative Officer & Publisher of DC. “It was 100% challenging because the two characters share a lot of visual similarities and they’re both driven by a core need to demand justice, so the mission statement was, how can I compare and contrast who these characters are in one cover?” Lee shared IGN about drawing the two comic book heroes together. “So, with Spawn, I went for a leaner, more athletic build where the cape was a living extension of these powers. And with Batman, I opted for a square, thicker, old-school boxer physique. Leaning forward with muscles curled, this Batman reacts with lightning speed on any threat and his cape is more of an element of camouflage – a way for Batman to blend into the deepest shadows.”
