In an interview with The Stage, the actor says George Takeiknown for playing Hikaru Sulu star treksaid he came out as gay in 2005 because of his rebellion against a decision by Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Schwarzenegger served as governor of California from 2003 to 2011. At the time, he vetoed a bill that would legalize same-sex marriage in California. Takei came out as gay in an interview with Frontiers magazine when she had been dating her husband for 18 years.

Takei said the following to the The stage: “Why did it take me so long to leave? Because I’m an actor and I wanted to work. I learned at a very young age that you cannot be an openly gay actor and expect a job. And I was already an Asian-American actor, so I was already very limited. To this day, there are great Hollywood actors who don’t come out to protect their careers.”

“I have been closed off for a long period of my career. I was silent during the AIDS crisis, which fills me with guilt, even though I have written checks and checks to AIDS organizations,” he added:
