A number of participants on Netflix’s Team play: the challenge, a game show based on the popular drama series, had to be treated for weather-related symptoms during the production of its most recent episode. According to Variety, on Monday, more than 400 players were involved in a huge game of red light, green light (aka statues), and three had to be treated during the game. Two were treated for “mild ailments” linked to a powerful cold spell currently underway in the UK, where the show was filmed. A third participant reportedly required treatment after running into a wall. It appears that the medics present were able to contain the injuries and no one was hospitalized.
The game was filmed in an abandoned aircraft hangar at Bedford’s Cardington Studios, north of London. Temperatures in the area hit a low of zero degrees Celsius and it is unlikely that the hangar provided much shelter from the harsh weather outside.
“Some people couldn’t move their feet because it was so cold,” an eliminated player reportedly told the British tabloid The sun. “You could hear someone shout ‘doctor’ and the crew rushed on. We ended up standing there for 30 minutes between takes.”
“We care deeply about the health and safety of our cast and crew and have invested in all appropriate safety procedures,” Netflix said Variety in a statement. “Although it was very cold on set – and the contestants were prepared for it – all claims of serious injury are untrue.”
The Red Light, Green Light game was one of the first competitions in the series, with production beginning on Monday. According to the Variety report, only 228 of the first 456 players made it to the next round, suggesting huge numbers of people would be involved in the early rounds of the game show, which would be reduced to a manageable size for the audience to keep an eye on the contestants . Since it was the first round of competition and so many people were involved, the report speculates that rescheduling would have been nearly impossible without incurring significant costs to production.
The weather has been unusually freezing in the UK lately, which can constantly pose challenges to the show’s production, particularly for games that take place outdoors or have to use facilities where the weather becomes a factor.
The series, inspired by the 2021 Korean drama that became a global hit on Netflix, invited contestants from around the world to compete in challenges based on the Korean kids games featured in the show, as well as new games released for the game show have been developed. The winner will receive a cash prize of $4.56 million.
