She-Hulk VFX Team Reveals Incredible Details About Jen’s Amazing Dress (Exclusive)

Stories about how detailed Marvel Studios’ visual effects can be have dominated social chatter before, including the immense depth plows created to build WandaVision’s Westview from the ground up. Since a hero like She-Hulk was created entirely using computer-generated imagery, a lot of care went into how she looked in her first live-action series in She-Hulk: lawyer. When it comes to Lawyer, that means putting a huge focus on developing part of the character’s wardrobe. Case in point: Since Jen Walters (Tatiana Maslany) was often seen in her She-Hulk form, visual effects vendors also had to create CGI clothes for the character, such as the flowing dress she wore to her awards ceremony.

As Wētā VFX supervisor Guy Williams tells us, artists had to create more than 1.06 million sequins for the super dress, an amazing feat in itself.

“They bombed using Houdini. There were a lot of iterations to get all the permutations right,” Williams recalled. “The hard part is that since they’re three different sequins, they don’t exist in parody. What I mean by that is there aren’t 330,000 of each of the three different types of sequins.”

Each of the sequins was a different color, adding a whole different layer to the equation.

“Since the sequins ranged from silver to bright blue, it changed the color of the dress significantly if you got the proportion wrong,” adds the VFX boss. “And of course we didn’t take the real dress and count, so we had to guess at the numbers and keep playing them until the dress looked like the real dress, which I mean, in hindsight it wasn’t necessary because we never got the real dress, but we used that kind of attention to detail.”

The first season of She-Hulk: lawyer is now available to stream exclusively on Disney+. If you haven’t tried Disney+ yet and want to give it a try, you can do that here.
