Paramount Pictures will release the sixth installment in their horror slasher franchise, screamand it looks like a new set of fears for a new generation. Scream VI will be the first film in the franchise not to star Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) and will focus on the characters of Jenna Ortega, Melissa Barrera, Jasmine Savoy Brown and Mason Gooding. The studio recently released a new full trailer showing off what fans could expect in the sequel, but the one thing it failed to do was explain how much time has passed since then Scream 5. Now the director of the film is officially clarifying how much time has passed between films. In a new interview with NMEMatt Bettinelli-Olpin told the site that there isn’t much time between them Scream 5 and Scream VI.
“Scream VI takes place shortly after the events of Scream 5and follows how [the characters] coping with the Woodsboro massacre [in Scream 5]Bettinelli-Olpin revealed. “It follows them to New York, and then Ghostface shows up and everything goes off the rails.”
The new scream is set to see the return of the fifth film’s newcomers, Barrera (Sam), Brown (Mindy), Gooding (Chad), and Ortega (Tara), as well as Scream 4‘s Hayden Panettiere (Kirby) and debutants Dermot Mulroney and Tony Revolori. The film will also feature longtime franchise star Courteney Cox as Gale Weathers. Unfortunately, Campbell will not be returning to the scream franchise for the first time since its inception in 1996. It has been reported that Campbell will not be returning as Sidney Prescott due to a payment slippage. In August, Campbell spoke to PEOPLE and opened up about the discrepancy in pay equality.
“I didn’t feel like what I was being offered equaled the value I bring to this franchise and have added to this franchise over 25 years,” Campbell told the magazine. “And as a woman in this industry, I think it’s really important for us to be appreciated and fight to be appreciated.” She added: “I really don’t believe if I were a man and did five installments of a huge blockbuster franchise in 25 years, the number I was offered would be the one that would be offered to a man. And in my soul, I just couldn’t do that. I couldn’t keep feeling that feeling — feeling undervalued and feeling the unfairness or lack of honesty around it.”
Is doing Scream VI Do you have a time jump?
“No, that’s not it [a big time jump] not at all. It’s almost right after the last one. Basically, the amount of time that has elapsed between one movie and another is the amount of time that has elapsed scream time,” Barrera explained. The new film also leaves Woodsboro and heads to New York, what Barrera recently called a “more humiliating” setting.
Scream VI hits theaters March 10, 2023.
