Ricochet advances to the next round of the WWE SmackDown World Cup tournament

Tonight’s episode of WWE SmackDown kicked off with the first of two matches in the first round of the World Cup Tournament, which was between Ricochet and Mustafa Ali. However, the odds swung in Ricochet’s favor earlier in the day, when Ali was examined by WWE trainers and told that while he was medically cleared to wrestle, he probably shouldn’t. He did it anyway, and he put in a valiant effort, even coming close to a big win, but a missed splash would eventually doom him. The damage to his ribs was too much, and Ricochet would pin him and advance to the next round of the tournament.

Towards the end of the match, Ali went up and went for a splash, but Ricochet moved aside. Ali landed right on his injured ribs, giving Ricochet the opening he needed. He went up and hit a Shooting Star and took the pin and the win, advancing to the next round of the tournament.

Ricochet will face Braun Strowman in the next round, while at the other end of the series Santos Escobar will face whoever wins tonight’s game between Sami Zayn and Butch. Whoever wins the tournament will become the first-ever SmackDown World Cup winner, and WWE has shown off the beautiful trophy that the winner will receive in recent weeks.

Next up for WWE is Survivor Series War Games, and while the card is still coming together, you can find the current lineup below.
