Rick and Morty co-creator and star Justin Roiland faces misdemeanor domestic battery charges

Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland is facing legal troubles now that a California court has charged him with domestic violence. The report, as shared by NBC news, reveals that the case dates back to May 2020 after a criminal complaint was filed against the actor. Roiland appeared in court earlier today for a pre-trial hearing.

According to current reports, Roiland was charged with a criminal charge in 2023 of a felony domestic violence involving bodily harm and another felony false imprisonment by threat, violence, fraud and/or deceit. NBC News says Roiland pleaded not guilty in 2020 and his team did not respond to comment when approached.

At this time, the identity of the alleged victim remains anonymous. The Jane Doe was said to have been in a relationship with Roiland at the time of the incident and they have since applied for a protection order. Roiland has been ordered to stay 100 feet from the alleged victim and not to contact them in any way. This order currently lasts until October 2023.

Few details are currently known about the case, as much of the evidence is withheld ahead of Roiland’s trial. However, Orange County Superior Court records show that in 2020, Roiland pleaded not guilty to both offenses. This came after the co-creator was arrested in August 2020 and charged two months later.

For those unfamiliar with Roiland, you should know that the creator brought Rick and Morty to life with Dan Harmon. The creator is best known for voicing both Rick Sanchez and Morty in the hit comedy. At this time, Adult Swim has not commented on the pending lawsuit. The program recently concluded with the airing of the sixth season of Rick and Morty, which has been praised by fans. Season seven is currently in the works as Cartoon Network ordered a large number of episodes in May 2018.
