Peacock Exec has no regrets about switching the series to Netflix

Peacock is currently thriving thanks to the debut of Poker face like The traitors. However, the streaming site has canceled some fan-favorite comedies, including Girls5Eva. Created by Meredith Scardino, the series stars Sara Bareilles, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Busy Philipps, and Paula Pell as a former early 2000s girl band who decides to reunite. The show had its first two seasons on Peacock, but will move to Netflix for its third season. This week, The Hollywood Reporter‘s TV top 5 podcast had a conversation with Susan Rovner, the president of entertainment content at NBCUniversal TV and streaming, and she spoke about the decision to Girls5Eva to go.

“The numbers didn’t quite support picking up that second season,” Rovner explained. “We did it because we wanted to support it because we loved it. Similar to Vampire Academy, it was very fast in the life of our service. Dramas are very edible and that helps a service more initially and increases the scale you need. It came up before we were ready. I do think we will be ready in a few years and hopefully we can do something new with it. I hope Girls5eva will be the hit it deserves to be, because I love it too.”

In October, Netflix announced the surprise platform switch and revealed that they have renewed the show. “Our fame starts at 3 days, and it doesn’t stop at 4 tomorrow, we are girls5eva, can we get a high 6?? Girls5eva seasons 1-2 are coming to Netflix and season 3 is coming!” Netflix tweeted. It’s no big surprise that the streaming site would want to work with Scardino again after she executive produced and wrote their hit series, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.

During her conversation with TV top 5which Rovner gave a promising update on Poker face‘s future.

“It’s beautifully executed,” Rovner said Poker face. “We’re over the moon.” She added: “I know we don’t give numbers”, before the hosts tried to get them out of her, but she continued: “I can’t right now; hopefully one day we can, but [Poker Face] is definitely punching above its weight. In addition to the actual figures, we are also delighted with the critical reactions. [It] has 100 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.” When asked about a renewal announcement, she added, “I think some good news will probably come soon.”
