Night of the Comet Remake Filmmaker provides update on the status of the project

Throughout her career, filmmaker Roxanne Benjamin has expressed her love for the 1984 cult classic Night of the comet, leading to the announcement in 2018 that she was finally developing a new take on the concept, though Benjamin recently confirmed that the project has stalled due to some behind-the-scenes shakeups. When the remake was announced, Benjamin was said to be developing the script, though Orion herself went through some major changes in the years since, confirming that her take on the project is still in limbo. Orion was recently part of an Amazon acquisition, which may have further complicated things or led to the project finally moving forward.

“That’s an interesting one. It’s still alive, just not really in the same iteration, but it’s still great,” Benjamin revealed to /Movie. “It’s been through a lot of different things — everything consolidates with everything. The snake is eating itself right now in our industry. So it’s been through a lot of different hands throughout the process, I think, but it’s still there.”

Benjamin continued, “There are other things going on with it. That movie division, I think, is gone now, or I can’t even remember. I think Orion Pictures, they stopped making their own feature films and they just did pick-ups at a certain point. So their original features division was no longer active. That was a few years ago. The original script I wrote was part of that group. So now it’s in that weird limbo where that can never exist, because it’s in this entity that, I don’t know, it’s a lot of business matters.”

The original film followed two sisters who survive an event where a comet turns most of the planet into cannibalistic zombies, with a tone that embraces the camp and comedy of the premise and special effects of the time. When the remake was announced, it was said that it would more authentically embrace the horror and sci-fi themes presented in the story.

Night of the comet isn’t the only iconic horror movie Benjamin wants to revive, as she previously recalled two other cult classics she’d like to reboot for a new generation.

“The two things I’ve always wanted to make are things that are in the works or have been made, and that is The craft and the lost boys,Benjamin recently shared with ComicBook.com. “I feel like that’s built into a lot of the stuff I make. Most of my movies so far have been about women’s relationships, basically the core of it. I always try to express that in the things I make. I always want to do a version of it The Lost Boys that focuses on girls. The craftwas obviously very important to me growing up, and a version of a movie like that is something I’ve always wanted to do. If they ever want to reboot again The craftI’m all about that sh-t.”
