Michael B. Jordan channels Creed in violent new promo

Ahead of this weekend’s new episode, Saturday Night Live has released the first promo for Marvel Studios star Michael B. Jordan teasing his time as host of the show. In the short promo, Jordan quickly shows off his Belief skills in a short boxing match where he takes on none other than new series star Michael Longfellow. Watch the video below, where Jordan jokes that he was hired because of his looks, not his talent. Despite notable appearances in many blockbusters, this won’t just be Jordan’s first time hosting Saturday Night Live but his first time ever on the show. He will perform alongside musical guest Lil Baby.

Jordan helped revive the Rocky franchise with 2015’s Beliefdirected by his Black Panther employee Ryan Coogler. The film was a huge success, with a sequel in 2018 and a third film on the way. Jordan isn’t just returning for the next one Creed III but he also got behind the camera and made it his first feature film as a director.

“I was pretty nervous when I started and wondered what it would be like,” Jordan previously said Empire. “‘Who’s call action and cut? Is that me?!’… Speaking to Denzel (Washington) and Bradley Cooper and others who directed themselves, they told me that you have to find your groove and your pace with your first AD and actors… But it’s also like having a superpower: within your performance you can also direct. It saves some time in some areas, because you get the chance to correct yourself in the moment. So that’s a liberating experience to have. After a while it became fun.”

Given Jordan’s place in pop culture, not just as Adonis Creed but as a major character of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Killmonger, it’s not inconceivable that there will be some kind of sketch this weekend that references one, or both, of those roles.

A major trend for SNL this season has seen hosts take their famous roles lightly, or even reprise them in major ways. Elvis star Austin Butler starred in an Elvis-themed skit during his episode, Dave Chappelle reprized several characters from his hit Chapelles Show, Steve Martin & Martin Short reprized their Father of the Bride characters, and Aubrey Plaza appeared as her Parks and Recreation character April Ludgate. In short, it will probably happen this weekend as well.
