Kris Wu became known for his participation in the boy band EXO; court stated that the Chinese-Canadian artist will be deported after serving his sentence
Chinese Canadian singer and actor Chris Wu was sentenced to 13 years in prison in China. He was found guilty of rape and, as announced by the Chinese court on Friday the 25th, the artist will be deported after serving his sentence. Wu was born in China but has the Canadian nationality. He gained international fame as a member of the band kpop EX. After that, he focused his career in China and started participating in local TV shows. As published by Variety, the accusations against Wu were made last July by influencer Du Meizhu, 18 years old. She claimed she was raped by the singer when she was 17 at a time when she was drunk. She later also accused Wu of doing the same to other young women. At the time, he denied all allegations. Two weeks after the incident, a prosecutor in Beijing’s Chaoyang District issued a statement saying the singer would be arrested “after investigation according to law”.
After the conviction, the court ruled that Wu had forced three women to have sex with him in 2020, all of whom had consumed alcohol. As early as 2018, he organized activities classified as fornication with two women in his house and again there was talk of alcohol. The Canadian Embassy was present in court for the singer’s conviction. The hearing was not public, apparently to avoid exposing the victim and also to manage the fallout of the case, as Wu is one of China’s biggest celebrities. In the country, the crime of rape normally results in a prison sentence of three to 10 years, although in cases of egregious the punishment can be up to life imprisonment or even the death penalty. Sex involving three or more participants over the age of 16 can carry up to five years in prison.
