Netflix’s just-released romantic comedy You people has received some criticism online, but not for its handling of race and class (as you might expect after reading some of the reviews). Instead, fans are taking pictures of the film online after a cast member revealed that the big, climactic kiss between Jonah Hill and Lauren London was done using CGI during post-production. Fans wondering what the claim was went to watch it on Netflix and…well. It looks like the moment contains some CGI to make the magic happen.
The revelation came from comedian Andrew Schulz, who plays the cousin of Hill’s character Avi in the film. Schulz co-hosts the podcast Brilliant idiots with Charlamagne tha God, and there he dropped the bomb.
“I don’t even know if I should share this, but in the final scene they don’t even kiss,” Schulz said. “It’s CGI. Swear to God, son.”
Schultz said that after watching the scene film, he knew the pair hadn’t kissed, but thought nothing of it. Instead, he just assumed the kiss wouldn’t appear on screen and the camera would cut away.
“I’m there, I’m watching the wedding and I see them go in for the kiss and their faces stop so far,” he said, gesturing to show a few inches of distance. “And I’m like, ‘I wonder how they’re going to play that in the movie. They’re probably just going to cut there… But in the movie you could see their faces getting close, and then you see their faces kind of turning into a fake kiss.”
You can see the scene below (captured by a fan after Schulz made his claims).

It’s not clear what the motivation would be to stop for the kiss. It may have been the director’s discretion due to Covid-19, or something on the part of one of the actors, but no one involved in making the decision has commented on it yet. There’s been a lot of speculation on social media that one or the other actor wasn’t comfortable kissing, but both have done that in other movies, so unless someone makes a comment, it’s all just speculation.
Twitter, of course, has its fun.
“You all did that after Jonah Hill got hold of Lauren London and she couldn’t even kiss the guy on camera for the check,” he joked. a tweet that has been seen more than 500,000 times as of this writing.
You can see the movie for yourself on Netflix.
