Jimmy Smith talks about leaving WWE Raw

Earlier today, WWE revealed a major uproar to their commentary teams in Raw, SmackDown and NXT, and one of the biggest surprises in that uproar was the absence of Raw commentator Jimmy Smith. Smith has been part of the Raw commentary team since May 2021, but the new Raw commentary team will consist of Kevin Patrick, Corey Graves, Byron Saxton and Cathy Kelley. Addressing the news and his departure on Twitter, Smith had nothing but positive things to share about those he met during his time at WWE and the acceptance he received from WWE fans.

Smith wrote on Twitter: “Just wanted to say, now that the story is officially out, my time with the WWE is officially over. I had a lot of fun and met great people. Really and truly blown away by the acceptance by the WWE fans You make it happen every week and your enthusiasm was amazing!”

Prior to working on Raw, Smith hosted NXT TakeOver pre-show panels and worked on special NXT projects, and continued to host his SiriusXM show Unlocking the Cage. Before that, he worked on commentary for Bellator MMA and UFC, as well as presenting American Ninja Warrior.

Raw wasn’t the only show to get commentary. The SmackDown commentary team will consist of Michael Cole and Wade Barrett, and Barrett will come over from the NXT commentary team. Backstage interviews on SmackDown are provided by Kayla Braxton and Megan Morant. On NXT, Vic Joseph continues on NXT, but is now joined by WWE Legend Booker T, who replaces Barrett. The NXT backstage interviews and segments will be further handled by McKenzie Mitchell.

WWE made it a point to say that Pat McAfee will resume work on SmackDown commentary when his work on College GameDay is finished for the season. It is unknown if Barrett will stay for a three-man stand or if he will return to NXT for a while.

What do you think of the new teams? Let us know in the comments or as always you can discuss all things wrestling with me on Twitter @MattAguilarCB!
