Jessica Chastain reveals what made her most nervous about playing Tammy Wynette on the upcoming Showtime series

In the upcoming Showtime limited series George & Tammy, Jessica Chastain and Michael Shannon take on the roles of two of country music’s greatest icons, Tammy Wynette and George Jones, but as it turns out, portraying the pair, dubbed Mr. and Mrs. Country Music in the 1970s, is in and of itself. al That wasn’t what made Chastain the most nervous. It turned out to be singing. Speak with ETChastain revealed that singing on the series made her the most nervous as both she and Shannon used their own singing voices on the project.

“Yes, the singing,” Chastain said. “Sometimes before I sang a song, I would look into the audience and see all these sweet faces of these girls and think, ‘Don’t listen to the lyrics to these songs.'”

While the vocals may be what Chastain is most nervous about, showrunner Abe told Sylvia The Hollywood Reporter that it was very important for her and Shannon to use their own vocals in the series.

“I think the most important thing to remember is that George and Tammy themselves conveyed so much pain and beauty and sadness and joy and happiness and all this emotion in their singing, and that’s what we wanted to capture with Michael and Jessica,” said Sylvia . . “The vocals are recorded live and you always get their true feelings in the vocals, that’s how they’re most like George and Tammy.”

Directed by John Hillcoat, the series, which also stars Steve Zahn, Kelly McCormack, Katy Mixon and Walter Goggins, will tell the story of Wynette and Jones, who created many iconic country music hits together, while sharing a rocky personal relationship as a couple.

“I found it fascinating that someone like Tammy Wynette, who sang all these songs, like ‘Stand by Your Man,’ was also married five times,” Chastain previously said. “I was excited about this woman who was married and divorced multiple times and wrestled in Nashville and really made a name for herself on her own. She charted multiple times before meeting George Jones.”

George & Tammy debuts December 4 on Showtime.
