A police statement released on January 25 outlined the details of what happened in Renner’s accident, after the emergency brake on the snowplow he was riding failed to work. When Renner’s cousin was in line, Renner sprang into action to save him and was accidentally crushed.

“Pistenbully’s snowplow began to slide causing Renner to get out of the vehicle without using the emergency brake,” the report said. “Although the Pistenbully had some mechanical issues, based on our mechanical inspection, it is believed that the parking brake prevented the Pistenbully from moving forward. When Renner attempted to stop or divert the Pistenbully to avoid injury to (his nephew), he pulled under the vehicle through the track and ran over.”

“Once he got off the Pistenbully, he realized it was going straight to[his cousin],” it continues. “He was afraid the Pistenbully would hit (his cousin), so he decided to try to stop or divert the Pistenbully.” Then the Snowcat rolled over him and he sustained significant injuries. “The Pistenbully rolled over him and continued down the road. He lay down on the ground and concentrated on his breathing while (his cousin and others) helped him until medical personnel arrived on scene.”
