He also confirmed that the project is a movie and that he has met with Cavill and talked about “some exciting opportunities to work together in the future”.
Gunn and Safran assumed their roles as co-CEOs of DC Studios in November, tasked with overseeing the production of all DC-related films and television shows and said in a joint statement at the time that they looked forward to an “integrated, multi-layered universe”.
“We are honored to be the stewards of these DC characters that we have loved since we were kids,” Gunn and Safran added in a joint statement announcing their appointment for the first time. “We look forward to working with the most talented writers, directors and actors in the world to create an integrated, multi-layered universe that still allows for the individual expression of the artists involved. Our commitment to Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Harley Quinn and the rest of DC’s stable of characters is matched only by our dedication to the wonder of human possibility that these characters represent. We are excited to revive the theater experience around the world while we have some of the greatest, greatest, and greatest stories ever told.”
What about Henry Cavill as Superman?
As Gunn pointed out in his thread, Cavill will not be returning to the role of Superman due to the scope of the new story. Cavill himself also confirmed things in an Instagram post.
“Just met with James Gunn and Peter Safran and it’s sad news, everyone,” he wrote. “After all, I won’t be returning as Superman. After the studio told me to announce my return in October, ahead of their hiring, this news isn’t the easiest, but such is life. The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build on. I wish them and everyone involved in the new universe good luck and the happiest of fortunes. For those who have stood by my side over the years. … we can grieve for a moment, but then we have to remember… Superman is still here. Everything he stands for still exists, and the examples he gives us are still there! My turn to wear the cape is over, but what Superman stands for never will. It’s been a fun ride with you all, both forward and up.”
