James Cameron teases the Na’vi cultures the next sequel will explore

While avatar introduced the public to a group of Na’vi who were specifically adapted to life in the forest, Avatar: the way of the water showed Na’vi adapted to an aquatic subsistence, indicating how many Na’vi cultures exist on Pandora. For the coming avatar3James Cameron recently recalled that the upcoming film will focus on cultures that embrace the element of fire, not only with regard to the more practical elements, but also teases that they may not be as benevolent to societies as the Na’vi we have seen so far. Avatar: the way of the water is in theaters now.

Speak with 20 minutesTranslated from French, Cameron explained that the upcoming film will “explore cultures different from the ones I’ve already showcased.” He continued: “The fire will be represented by the ‘Ash People’. I want to show the Na’vi from a different angle, because at the moment I have only shown their good sides. In the early films there are very negative human examples and very positive Na’vi examples. avatar3, we do the opposite. We will also explore new universes as we continue the story of the main characters. I can say that the last parts will be the best. The others were an introduction, a way to set the table before serving the meal. But, of course, everything depends on how avatar2 will be received, if it finds its audience.”

With the first two films largely seeing human characters, or human-based avatars, serving as the antagonists to the native Na’vi, Cameron’s comments suggest the third film could explore new avenues for storytelling.

Writers to The way of the water Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver similarly hinted that the next chapter in the saga will lean more on inter-communal conflict than inter-species conflict.

“There’s a lot going on between men and women and between the two men and the two women,” Jaffa explained Variety earlier this month. “A lot of dynamics have been set up that continue to play out.”

“You kind of have a deeply relatable set of dynamics, interfamily, interpersonal, interclan, played out on these incredibly inflated scales of different worlds,” Silver added. “The clans you’re going to meet and the worlds you’re going to find on Pandora – you can’t even imagine what they are. Just like the tulkun were a revelation for this movie, there’s a lot more of that stuff to come. It’s “incredibly exciting, the story that happens to the Sullys. You couldn’t predict it.”
