How to breed pokemon and get eggs

Pokemon Scarlet and purple bring back Pokemon breeding and the eggs to hatch, but this time the long-standing Pokemon mechanic looks a lot different than it ever did on Nintendo Switch or elsewhere. Paldea doesn’t have drop-off nurseries to store Pokemon in while you wait for them to get together and lay eggs – instead, players have to help ease the process by loading their Pokemon with the right food to increase the chances that they get at least one (if not several) eggs.

Fortunately, this new mechanic is fairly easy to master, so once you figure out the best practices for raising Pokemon, you’ll have eggs galore. And to help you on that point, here’s what you need to know about Pokemon breeding Scarlet and purple.

How do you breed pokemon Scarlet and purple?

For starters, just progress through the game until you get to the point where you’re taught how to set up a picnic for your Pokemon team and make sandwiches for them. It’s easy and can’t be missed, so you’ll know as soon as you can use this feature.

After that, you need to go to an open area (not in a city) and make sure you have compatible Pokemon in your party so that it is possible for an egg to manifest. We haven’t experimented much with egg-raising groups, but the simplest solution is to have at least one male and female Pokemon of the same species. If you stack your party with just that one species, you’ll have a better chance of finding eggs.

Use the “X” menu to select the picnic option that will bring out your Pokemon and just wait. Occasionally check the basket on the floor at the end of the picnic table to see if it contains an egg.

How to increase your chances of getting an egg

However, there’s too much going on in Paldea to wait, so if you want an egg or two as soon as possible, you’ll need to feed your Pokemon the right food. Certain sandwiches that you can make at the picnic table guarantee your Pokemon an egg bonus that increases the chance of laying an egg. Alternatively, you can buy a meal from a vendor in a city to ensure you get the bonus without any guesswork.

If you choose to make your own sandwiches at the picnic when you’re trying to set the mood for your Pokemon, make sure to use sweet ingredients, as those will result in egg bonuses. An easy combination is to throw fruits like bananas and strawberries on the sandwich, along with jam or yogurt. It may not look pretty, but using sweet ingredients will definitely give you eggs.
