House of the Dragon beats Dahmer as most requested new series

HBO Maxs Game of Thrones spin-off House of the Dragon went on to rank as the best streaming series in North America last week, though Netflix is new Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Storythe streamer’s biggest hit since squid game. Given Netflix’s position as the best streaming platform in the world, it’s always a little surprising when a big hit for Netflix doesn’t become the overall #1 series in the streaming space — but given that Dahmer is not nearly as expensive as Houses of the Dragon is, and their ratings came shockingly close, everyone involved probably has a pretty good feeling about how the numbers are falling apart.

Exact numbers are not provided, with streaming ratings being given the same way comic book sales are counted. Rather than learning the exact number of viewers, shows are ranked based on an “average serial number.” Last week, Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story had 50.2 times the average serial demand last week, versus House of the Dragon, which weighed 52.8 times this week, according to Parrot Analytics data. Parrot’s figures include consumer research, streaming, downloads and social media, according to TheWrap.

According to the official of HBO House of the Dragon synopsis, “The prequel series finds the Targaryen dynasty at the pinnacle of power, with more than 15 dragons under their yoke. Most empires – real and imagined – crumble from such heights. In the case of the Targaryens begin their slow fall nearly 193 years before the events of Game of Thrones, when King Viserys Targaryen breaks a century of tradition by naming his daughter Rhaenyra heir to the Iron Throne. But when Viserys later fathers a son, the court is shocked. when Rhaenyra loses her status as his heir, and seeds of division sow friction across the empire.”

The series is currently a rare bright spot for Warner Bros. Discovery. The company’s reputation is suffering as new management seem determined to sabotage HBO Max from the inside, removing content and frustrating both their subscribers and the talent whose work is being thrown away. If the cancellation of the nearly completed batgirl movie is all to assume, it seems most of these moves are meant to save small amounts of money, to offset the massive debt that Discovery took on to get Warner Bros. from AT&T.

You can watch new episodes of the series on Sunday evenings on HBO Max’s ad-free level.
