Henry Thomas talks about filming ET in chronological order (exclusive)

It has been more than 40 years now ET became a pop culture phenomenon, etching the image of a young Henry Thomas into the collective imagination of Gen-X for life. Thomas, but another child star who was going to do great things, Drew Barrymore. Unlike most major blockbusters, ET was shot in chronological order. That requires a lot of pre-planning by the filmmakers, but in the case of a movie with a lot of child actors, it probably also eased studio concerns about continuity if someone has a growth spurt during production.

It also helped director Steven Spielberg create a more believable connection between the young actors and E.T.’s character. That means when ET has to go home at the end of the movie, their reactions were more sincere. According to Thomas, who recently spoke to ComicBook.com’s Chris Killian in support of Guillermo del Toro’s cabinet of curiosities on Netflix, no other filmmaker in his career has nailed down the same strategy.

“I’ve been in movies where they tried to do it, with limited success, and ET was pretty close to chronological order,” said Thomas, “although on the first day we shot the whole school sequence, so it was a little bit out of sync. But all emotional things were on track in terms of building a relationship with ET
