When the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special hits Disney+ later this week, it will set a surprise record for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Part of Marvel’s new “Special Presentation” offering, the Holiday special will be the first project in the franchise not to have a villain. Instead, the special will largely focus on an adventure to Earth starring Mantis (Pom Klementieff) and Drax (Dave Bautista).
While there was a threat in the initial treatment, Gunn said in a recent conversation with Variety he chose to remove that and focus solely on the heroes given the special presentation’s shorter runtime.
“Before I wrote the screenplay, I wrote a treatment, and in the treatment there was another threat. I just realized I wasn’t interested in that other thing,” Gunn told the box. “There was an action scene at the end where Kevin Bacon jumped around and did action stunts, which would have been pretty cool, but the threat didn’t interest me at all. What interested me was the interaction between the characters. So I just cut that out and make it a story about people from.”
Is The Guardians of the Galaxy holiday special Mandatory display for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3?
During a recent interview with ComicBook. coms Phase zero host, Brandon Davis, Gunn was asked if the Christmas special should be watched before the movie.
“Well, I always try to balance these things, so I love it,” Gunn explained. “People have to Holiday special. You’re obviously going to learn a lot about where the Guardians have been over the years. You know, you’re going to see how they live in Knowhere now. They have a new ship, the Bowie. They have a dog [who] is now part of their crew that has telekinesis named Cosmo. So where you learn all that, and then there are some bigger bits of spoiler-like knowledge. You’re going to learn all those things. In a sense the Holiday special was a Trojan horse for me to sneak in things that become important Part 3so I don’t have to spend a lot of time at the beginning of that movie to explain it.”
The Guardians of the Galaxy holiday special will be released on Disney+ on November 25. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. will be released in theaters on May 23, 2023.
