God of War Ragnarok will be the biggest PlayStation launch ever

While it was assumed that War god Ragnarok would be a huge success for PlayStation to close out 2022, it turns out the game has done better than expected. Since first launching in 1994, PlayStation has had a number of successful franchises. The Last of Us, Uncharted, Ratchet & Clank and Gran Turismo are just a few of the many great properties that have emerged from PlayStation. And while these franchises are all big in their own right, none of them have ever sold a game as well at launch as it did War god Ragnarok.

Announced today on social media, PlayStation has confirmed that War god Ragnarok has become the biggest game in the history of the video game brand. In total, Ragnarok sold 5.1 million copies in its first week alone, making it the best-selling game for any God of War title at launch. However, outside of the God of War series alone, PlayStation also revealed that Ragnarok is the fastest-selling first-party game ever released by PlayStation. In short, the highly anticipated sequel is nothing short of a monumental hit for those at Sony and developer Santa Monica Studio.

Though it’s a bit mind blowing to see how well War god Ragnarok did, the game had one significant advantage over a number of previous PlayStation releases. specifically, Ragnarok had the benefit of launching on both PS5 and PS4, which naturally means it had a larger number of users able to purchase the game. For the most part, Sony has released many of its exclusives on separate platforms over the years, somewhat limiting their ability to sell in bulk. And although this is certainly not the only reason Ragnarok has done so well, it certainly contributed greatly to its meteoric rise.

Did you play War god Ragnarok already for yourself? And are you surprised to learn that so many copies of the game have already been sold? Let me know in the comments or reach out to me on social media at @MooreMan12.
