The end is near for Fear the walking dead. AMC announced that the upcoming eighth season would be the last on the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour The living Dead spin-off will end with a shortened final season of 12 episodes. The season will be split into two parts, each consisting of six episodes, starting with the May 14 premiere of Season 8 on AMC and AMC+ and ending later in 2023. Danay García, who plays Luciana since the show’s second season in 2016, says “it’s time” to wrap up the show after nearly a decade on the air.
“One of the funniest questions I get is ‘What happened? Fear the walking dead that it ends?’ Nothing happened,” explains García on Instagram Live. “What happened is we’ve been on the air for eight seasons and we felt like it was a really fun run. Nothing really happened Fear. We’ve just been on the air for a long time, and it’s time [to end].”
García added, “I’m just so thankful for everyone I’ve crossed paths with.”
Created by Robert Kirkman and original showrunner Dave Erickson, Fear the walking dead debuted in 2015 as the west coast companion series to AMC’s hit The living Dead. García has long been part of a cast that includes Kim Dickens, Alycia Debnam-Carey, Frank Dillane, Colman Domingo, Rubén Blades, Cliff Curtis, Mercedes Mason and more recent additions Lennie James, Garret Dillahunt, Jenna Elfman, Maggie Grace, Mo Collins, Karen David, Christine Evangelista and Austin Amelio.

According to the official logline, “The eighth and final season of Fear the walking dead begins with the first six episodes following Morgan (Lennie James) and Madison’s (Kim Dickens) plans to save Mo from PADRE, and seven years later, Morgan, Madison, and the rest of the people they brought to the island are alive brought under PADRE’s cynical rule. With our characters demoralized and dejected, it’s up to them to rekindle everyone’s belief in a better world in the person Morgan and Madison set out to save in the first place – a now eight-year-old Mo (Zoey Merchant).”
