Echo 3 creator Mark Boal reveals difficulties shooting series in Colombia (exclusive)

The US State Department has issued dire warnings for citizens seeking to travel to Colombia, noting that “violent crime, including armed robbery and murder, is widespread” in a number of specific locations, including active terrorist groups. However, that did not stop film and television productions from establishing themselves there, including new Apple TV + series echo 3. Speaking to’s Chris Killian ahead of the show’s premiere, series creator Mark Boal talked about working in Colombia throughout the shoot. When we asked if they were ever nervous about working in the South American country, the answer was surprising.

“No, I actually mean we shot during the pandemic. So the biggest issue was the COVID precautions and making sure the crew was safe from the same thing everyone else around the world was facing,” affirmed the Academy Award -winner. “Colombia has a bit of a reputation for having a security problem. But we didn’t really deal with that. I mean, we took some precautions, but we didn’t have any problems on that front. It was mostly the mosquitoes and COVID.”

Boal went on to explain how his decisions as showrunner for the series, and his own taste in television storytelling, shaped the concept of echo 3 episode to episode, and how Colombia helped it in that regard as well.

I’m not too fond of TV shows where every episode is the exact same mix of dialogue and violence and the exact same actors over and over again. So the world is just like in a movie, the world keeps expanding and shifting. And that was super fun to work on and of course, or maybe not obvious, but also just kind of a big logistical challenge. We shot everything in Colombia after the pilot. The rest of the series is set in Colombia, which is a beautiful country, but also quite tough when you have to deal with the diverse geography there. We went to the beaches. We were also in the similar teeming city of Bogota and in the jungle itself. That was great on camera and looked great and was kind of a character in its own right, but it’s a tough physical environment to be in.

The first three episodes of echo 3 premieres on Apple TV+ on Wednesday, November 23, with new episodes added every week. Luke Evans leads the cast for the series based on the award-winning series “When Heroes Fly”, created by Omri Givon and inspired by Amir Gutfreund’s novel of the same name. Apple TV+ describes it this way:

Set in South America, this action thriller follows Amber Chesborough, a brilliant young scientist who forms the emotional heart of a small American family. When Amber goes missing along the border between Colombia and Venezuela, her brother Bambi and her husband Prince go missing. – two men with deep military experience and complicated pasts – struggle to find her in a layered personal drama, set against the explosive backdrop of a secret war.
