Rapper Lil’ Dicky’s show Dave returns this year (finally) for Season 3, and it looks like a lot of celebrity guest stars are coming along! The TCA panel for Dave Season 3 has revealed that musicians and actors such as Usher, Rick Ross, Demi Lovato, Don Cheadle, Machine Gun Kelly, Megan Fox, Killer Mike and Travis Barker will all appear in Dave Season 3 – and that’s yet to come. but the tip of the iceberg!
“That’s just a fraction [of the guest stars] and the fraction I didn’t name will blow you away,” Dave “Lil Dicky” Burd revealed to the press during the TCA presentation.
Dave co-creator Jeff Schaffer teased how the show offers stars a unique opportunity to both play themselves and play with public perceptions or stigmas about who they are:
“On Dave“People like to play funny versions of themselves or play with their public perception — a real plus for them,” explains Schaffer. “Everyone from Lin-Manuel Miranda plays a passive-aggressive bastard. People want to come and have fun.”
Dave even sets itself apart from its closest contemporary (Donald Glover’s Atlanta) in that it simultaneously plays with a real picture of Hollywood stardom and at times wildly exaggerates the boundaries of that world to almost surreal levels. It makes celebrity cameos even more appealing to audiences, as viewers have no idea where a seemingly mundane or stereotypical portrayal of a star will end up at the end of an episode.
For example: Dave season 2 devoted an entire episode to Dave trying to get through a day while setting up a date between himself and the hit singer Doja Cat. Doja did indeed appear in the episode – but with barely a word spoken, as we followed her through her own demanding day as a pop star, taking quiet moments to answer Dave’s texts. Of course, Dave lets the big chance pass, and viewers were left haunted when a disappointed Doja stood up just as she was finally about to make a grand entrance.
Even the cast of Dave is a meta nod to celebrity, with Dicky playing Dave; his real-life hype man and fellow performer GaTa playing himself; comedian Andrew Santino plays Dave’s old friend and manager Mike, and Odd Future rapper Travis “Taco” Bennett plays Dave’s friend/music producer Elz.
