Doctor Who Showrunner Breaks Silence on Disney’s Involvement in Series

The news that The Walt Disney Company would be involved in the future of Doctor Who took fans of the franchise by surprise. The deal was announced as a partnership between the BBC and Disney Branded Television, bringing the upcoming new season of the show to the Disney+ streaming platform around the world. Doctor who into a global franchise for British audiences and the rest of the world.” Rumors soon began to circulate that Disney would play a major role in shaping the series and its content, including rumors of a super-big budget that would allow the show could compete with the likes of Power rings.

Since then, the series’ creators haven’t really touched on any of the fandom speculation and conversation, but in a new interview, showrunner Russell T Davies has set the record straight on at least one of the drafts. Speak with Doctor Who magazine (through radio times), Davies specifically commented on the rumor that the show’s budget would grow to $10 million per episode. His response is, “That’s an exaggeration. If that was the budget, I’d be speaking to you from my base on the moon… That’s not the budget, and I’m concerned that such misinformation creates false expectations. We have a nice, handsome budget and we’re very happy with how we’re handling it.”

Davies was previously the showrunner for the first four seasons of the revived Doctor Who on the BBC, covering Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant’s tenures as characters. He’s been absent since then, but is back for the 2023 series of 60th Anniversary specials and will star the show’s 15th season when Ncuti Gatwa takes over as the lead.

However, the 2023 specials won’t be the start of Gatwa in the role, as the recent episode “The Power of the Doctor” saw a major twist. While regular Jodie Whittake was preparing to regenerate, which many assumed would herald Gatwa’s arrival as the Fourteenth Doctor, Tennant appeared, taking on the role of the Fourteenth Doctor for the upcoming 2023 and 2023 specials. Gatwa’s character the Fifteenth Doctor made when his time finally comes.

Tennant will be joined in the next batch of episodes by Catherine Tate, who returns as companion Donna Noble. Heart stopper escape Yasmin Finney plays a new character named Rose (not Which Rose), reportedly Donna’s daughter. “Maybe this is a missing story. Or a parallel world. Or a dream, or a trick, or a flashback,” Davies teased of Tennant and Tate’s return. “All I can confirm is that it’s going to be spectacular as two of our biggest stars reunite for the fight of their lives.”

Come back here tomorrow for whatever it is Doctor who is teasing, and perhaps new details about the 2023 specials that will be released next year.
