Todd field revealed that he just managed to release his movie Between Four Walls without letting Harvey Weinstein ruin it for the influence of Tom Cruise.
The director won two Golden Globes for his film this year tarin the Best Soundtrack and Best Actress categories, with Kate Blanchett. He stated in an interview The New Yorker magazineTodd said he panicked when Miramax bought his movie, and Tom helped him solve the problem:
“I was in tears in the bathroom and I called Tom Cruise and said, ‘Something terrible has happened.’ He actually told me: “This is how you’re going to do it. It’s going to take about six months and you’re going to beat him, but you have to do exactly as I say, one step at a time.”
Harvey Weinstein, co-founder of the studios, has always been famous for interfering with the projects he financed and forcing his vision into productions. Just as he feared, the producer demanded they re-edit the film, but Cruise’s strategy ultimately saved everything.
Todd explained that Tom had told him to abide by whatever changes Harvey asked for, and to wait for the public reaction on the test screenings, which he knew would fail.
With the result in hand and remembering how positive the response had been without edits at the Sundance Film Festival, the filmmaker was given permission to release his original version of the project.
“We made more than 25 times our budget. We also received nominations for five different Oscars, including Best Picture,” he concludes.
Harvey Weinstein ‘boycotts’ movies he didn’t like, says actress
Jessica Chatainwho was already abused by the director before being sentenced to prison on multiple charges of inappropriate behavior, is thankful Hollywood is rid of him.
In an interview last year, the actress, who is so disgusted with him that she doesn’t even mention his name, accused him of smear campaigns.
According to her, when he didn’t like a movie or an actor/actress, “magical” articles appeared smearing the name of whoever it was:
“Look, he-who-must-not-be-named has really changed prices. I don’t see it today like when I arrived in this market. When a movie got a lot of attention, suddenly all those articles were full of negative things. I believe He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named was the instigator of such campaigns.”
Between Four Walls is currently not available for streaming in Brazil.
