DC teases the death of a long-running villain

The year-long “Dawn of DC” initiative plays with fan expectations in some fun ways, bringing back the spotlight to some long-standing but underappreciated characters. Since these characters form the basis for some compelling stories, an upcoming adventure will include the death of a character. The first details came around at the end of last week World’s best #14 was revealed as part of DC’s April 2023 requests. The request suggests that billionaire businessman Simon Stagg is found dead and that Bruce Wayne/Batman are blamed for the murder.

Who is Simon Stagg?

Created by Bob Haney and Ramona Fradon in 1965 The brave and the bold #57, Stagg is a businessman responsible for getting Rex Mason/Metamorpho to gain superpowers. He often acts as an adversary to the character, especially since Rex is often romantically linked to Stagg’s daughter, Sapphire.

Interestingly enough, one of Stagg’s most recent appearances is in The amazing resulted in his death, a canon that seemingly doesn’t carry over into post-Infinite Frontier continuity.

What is Dawn of DC?

As of 2023, Dawn of DC includes the launch of a number of new titles, as well as a rebrand of books such as Action comics and Superman. The new titles in the pipeline include Green arrow, Unstoppable Doom Patrol, Green Lantern: Hal Jordan, Green Lantern: John Stewart, Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Cyborg, Shazam!, Steel millsand The penguin.

“After the events that are about to end in the Multiverse in Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths and DC Universe: Lazarus Planetthe DC Universe will be moving toward the light,” said DC publisher and chief creative officer Jim Lee in a statement when the initiative was first announced. “Featuring brand new series and storylines from some of the best creative members in comics, Dawn of DC is one of our most ambitious initiatives ever and is an opportunity for us to tell bigger and bolder stories across our line.”
