As the first chapter of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new vision for the DC Universe takes shape, it exemplifies his love of comics. The filmmaker and co-CEO of DC Studios even revealed how a weekend spent at a local Comic-Con turned out to be the best weekend of his life. Gunn and Safran held a small press event when they unveiled Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters. Gunn already has a successful career directing movies like The suicide squad and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3along with guiding the second season of Peacekeeper. That’s why he’s always asked why he’s taking on the challenge of becoming co-leader of DC Studios.
“People have asked me a lot, why did I take this job?” Gunn said at the press event on Monday. “I knew there would be a lot of trouble, a lot of trouble, but as many of you know, comic books are in my blood. These characters are in my blood. I was kind of an eccentric kid who didn’t really have many friends and loved comic books. I loved DC comic books, loved Marvel comic books. I didn’t get on well with my peers and my parents sent me to a psychiatrist when I was 11 years old to try and figure out what was going on hand. I never went to school. I just stayed home, read comic books, wrote and drew comic books. And the psychiatrist said to my father, “Why aren’t you interested in what your son is doing?” Because my dad really is a St. Louis, Missouri guy Loves Cardinals baseball loves things I don’t care about And my dad did And it was really the greatest thing my dad ever did was he started asking me about comics.”
Gunn then shared how a weekend at a Comic-Con in Chicago brought him closer to his father.
“He drove me to Creation Comic-Con in Chicago for a weekend, which was probably the best weekend of my life, even to this day I can say, because my wife isn’t there,” he said. “But it was amazing. We met Ernie Chan and talked to all these creative people, and it was just the best. We bought a bunch of comic books. The happiest moments of my life have been walking upstairs and seeing my dad reading a copy of Superman “And I wanted to take care of these characters. And we all know it’s been a hell of a road for many of them over the past few years, and things haven’t been together. And I really thought it was a challenge, but I think it’s an opportunity to create something really beautiful with these characters. I can’t go into politics, I can’t do science. So all I can do for this planet is make love stories. And that’s what I think we can do for the next eight to 10 years.”
James Gunn doesn’t have time for Season 2 of Peacemaker
Viola Davis returns as Amanda Waller in a new HBO Max series titled Waller. At the same press event for the DCU’s Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters slate, Peter Safran pointed it out Waller takes place between seasons 1 and 2 of Peacekeeper with Gunn adding that he “has no time to do Peacekeeper Season 2 now.”
Instead, fans can expect a lot from the supporting cast Peacekeeper appear in Waller.
“This will also feature some of Team Peacemaker as show regulars,” Gunn said at the event. “This basically follows Peacekeeper. We’ve got two great creatives working on it: Crystal Henry, who’s a writer Watchmanand Jeremy Carver, who created Doom patrollet’s flesh out this incredibly awesome story that I think is really fantastic and that HBO loves and they bring this all together.
