An important update to the Community film has arrived from two former stars on the show confirming production is set to take place this year. Both Alison Brie and Danny Pudi, who appeared on the TV show and star in the upcoming Prime Video movie Someone I used to knowconfirmed to Variety that they plan to shoot the highly anticipated movie sometime in 2023. Speaking at the film’s premiere, Brie said she was “cleaning up that schedule” to film the movie, while Pudi added, “it seems likely this year. Right now it’s just the timing…Everyone’s super excited, we’re just really, really excited.”
Brie and Pudi will seemingly be joined by fellow stars Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Jim Rash and Ken Jeong for the film, with no confirmation on whether Yvette Nicole Brown and Donald Glover, or other fan favorites, will appear. Sony Pictures Television and Universal Television are producing the film, which will be available on the Peacock streaming service upon release, along with the full series. Series creator Dan Harmon will write and executive produce the film alongside fellow series writer Andrew Guest. No director has been confirmed yet.
“‘Six seasons and a movie’ started as a cheeky line from the early seasons of Community and quickly sparked a passionate fan movement for this iconic, hilarious, and cool (cool, cool) NBC comedy,” Susan Rovner, president, Entertainment Content , NBCUniversal Television and streaming said earlier. “We are incredibly grateful to be able to bring fans this promised film 15 years later and we can’t wait to get to work with Dan Harmon, Andrew Guest, Joel McHale, Sony and our partners at UTV to continue this epic comedy . for Peacock audiences.”
Details on what will be part of the movie haven’t been confirmed, but Harmon has revealed some things that will NOT be in the movie, and frankly, fans of the show should know that these elements won’t appear.
“It’s much easier for me to rule things out than to tell you what we’re aiming for,” Harmon revealed Six seasons and a podcast. “For example, we say, ‘Do we really think it would be a good idea to be a paintball episode?’ It’s one of the first things to rule out because it’s the first thing that comes out of your head, and that’s a problem with the “Community” movie concept. We’ve done a lot of episodes where you’re happily locked in a construction that'” It’s not a traditional sitcom story, but rather is through the lens of David Fincher or Martin Scorsese. There were a lot of special episodes that were sort of homage to the genre. The paintball thing was one of them. We tried some more paintballing, and they were all perfectly awesome things to do, but would there ever be anything to capture the joy of the original paintball episode?”
The Community film currently has no release date, but if filmed this year, a 2024 release date certainly seems likely.
