Bob Chapek, Kareem Daniel’s ally, is also leaving Disney soon

Now that Bob Iger is back at Disney, a review of the C-suite is underway. On Monday, Iger announced in an internal memo that Kareem Daniel is stepping down from his role as chairman of Disney Media and Entertainment Distribution. As one of Bob Chapek’s top lieutenants on top of the subsidiary, Daniel oversaw the distribution and release of all Disney projects. In his role, Daniel eventually became the deciding factor in whether films received a theatrical or streaming release.

“I asked Dana Walden, Alan Bergman, Jimmy Pitaro and Christine McCarthy to collaborate on the design of a new structure that puts more decision-making back in the hands of our creative teams and rationalizes costs. As a result, Kareem Daniel will be leaving the company, and I hope you will all thank him for his years of service to Disney,” Iger wrote in his memo.

He added: “Our goal is to have the new structure in place in the coming months. No doubt elements of DMED will remain, but I believe fundamentally that storytelling is the engine of this business, and it belongs to the core of how we organize our businesses.”

Daniel’s departure is likely the first of many as the company reorganizes amid looming layoffs. Earlier this month, Chapek released a memo suggesting significant layoffs were on the table as the company looked to improve its bottom line.

“We have thoroughly reviewed the company’s content and marketing spend in conjunction with our content leaders and their teams,” said Chapek’s memo. “While we will not sacrifice the quality or the power of our unparalleled synergy machine, we must ensure that our investments are both efficient and deliver tangible benefits to both the public and the company. Second, we are reducing headcount through a targeted headcount . for the small subset of the most critical, business-driving functions will continue, but all other roles are on hold. Your segment leaders and HR teams will have more specific details on how this will apply to your teams.”
