Warner Bros. Discovery has made some major decisions about their HBO Max streaming service as well as their DC Films franchise. Incoming CEO David Zaslav canceled multiple films, including those in post-production bat girl And The miracle twins. Not much is known about why the movie was actually canceled, but there are reports claiming it was for tax reasons and there were recent reports that the movie failed to get released. Zaslav would later appoint James Gunn and Peter Safran as the first co-CEOs of the newly founded DC Studios, and the duo recently unveiled their jam-packed film slate. One of the stars of Batgirl is still talking about the movie and has revealed interesting things about their version of Gotham City and its DC villain. Brendan Fraser (The whale, Doom patrol) recently appeared on The Howard Stern Showwhere he revealed some new details about playing Firefly in bat girl.
“Yes, it was great. Adil [El Arbi] and Billall [Fallah], who made the Bad Boys movie, are really good at blowing things up and they love doing it. You know, like practical fire effects that make things pop, they’re right on top of it, and so firefly is right in their wheelhouse,” Fraser revealed. Gotham has never looked as good as Glasgow, Scotland. You know it’s in disrepair and just beautiful. Looks like it’s Gotham City. It is cast perfectly. You’ll believe it wherever you look at the city if you light it right. It was a story about a man who was employed and had his benefits cut and he was very angry with the system and what is he going to do but burn it down. That’s all you need to know. That’s a super villain right there. You have some sympathy for him. You also have some humanity to him and a loose screw on top of that because you know he’s the bad guy, but if he’s really like the best bad guys you sort of like them. That was this role. Very good on paper. I enjoyed this part.”
Gunn and Safran started out as co-CEOs of DC Studios last year, and it’s safe to say DC’s future looks bright. When the duo was announced by the new boss of Warner Bros. Discovery, they released a statement about their enthusiasm for the job.
“We are honored to be the stewards of these DC characters that we’ve loved since we were kids,” Gunn and Safran added in a joint statement. “We look forward to working with the most talented writers, directors and actors in the world to create an integrated, multi-layered universe that still allows for the individual expression of the artists involved. Our commitment to Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Harley Quinn and the rest of DC’s stable of characters is matched only by our dedication to the wonder of human possibility that these characters represent. We are excited to revive the theater experience around the world while we have some of the greatest, greatest, and grandest stories ever told.”
The next DC Studios movie to hit theaters will be Shazam! Anger of the Gods. Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line describe the film as follows: “Endowed with the powers of the gods, Billy Batson and his fellow foster kids are still learning how to juggle teenage life with adult superhero alter egos. But when the daughters of Atlas, a vengeful trio of ancient gods, arrive on Earth in search of the magic stolen from them long ago.
The film is directed by David F. Sandberg (Shazam!, Annabelle: Creation) and produced by Peter Safran. Anger of the Gods was written by Henry Gayden and Chris Morgan. Shazam! Anger of the Gods hits theaters March 17!
