One thing that quickly turns Barbarian into a cult-classic horror luminary is a sequence director Zach Cregger worked on at the end of the second act: Justin Long’s AJ Gilbride, an actor who tries to evade a sexual assault charge but ends up being held prisoner by a nightmarish ghoul of a woman, along with another prisoner named Tess (Georgina Campbell). After Barbarian shows us just how crafty a man AJ is, the disgraced actor gets his comeuppance when the beastly woman tries to suckle him on her breast, mimicking a strange tape about motherhood that she repeats endlessly in her underground low.
The scene of Justin Long’s face in close-up being force-fed to the most nightmarish version of a mother’s breast possible is sure to stick with viewers after watching Barbarian, as it’s safe to say that few have ever seen it in the horror genre. However, as Justin Long tells it, Cregger originally had a much worse idea for what was going to happen to AJ in “The Mother’s” den…
Barbarian’s sickening deleted scene explained
Speaking to Vulture (and also mentioned during a Q&A during Barbarian’s debut at Comic-Con 2022), Justin Long revealed that The Mother would use some bird-like tactics to make sure AJ got a hearty meal. Or at least what passed for a hearty meal down there underground:
“There was a moment after that when mom, because I wouldn’t want to grab her breast, grabs a rat – it runs past – and bites its head off and chews it and baby birds it in my mouth. That one was in the script, and I knew it was going to happen,” explains Long. “And we shot it right after we shot the breastfeeding scene. Zach cut that out. He felt it was roughly a bridge too far.”
That’s what Zach Cregger heard while making something Barbarian is probably the most terrifying thing about the movie so far. As mentioned, the scene where Long is breastfed is on its way to living in horror infamy — now that we know the scene has been filmed (and Long has gone through it) fans will be clamoring for Cregger to wipe out the world and ‘ release the Rat’. Cut off Barbarian.
