Adam Rich, Eight is Enough and Dungeons & Dragons Star, dies at age 54

Adam Rich, best known for his role in the television drama Eight Is Enough, has passed away at the age of 54. Rich was found lifeless at his home in Los Angeles on Saturday, a family member confirmed to TMZ. They gave no cause of death, but police suspect no foul play. Eight is enough followed a family of eight children, the Bradfords, about their lives as they grew and reached familiar milestones, from dating to marrying their own children. Rich played the character Nicholas Bradford, the youngest son of the family. Dick Van Patten, Lani O’Grady, Connie Needham and Grant Goodeve also starred in the ABC series, which ran from 1977 to 1981.

Rich began acting at Chatsworth High School in the San Fernando Valley. He was taught by the same teacher who taught Kevin Spacey and Val Kilmer. Rich’s other roles in TV shows such as Dungeons and Dragons, Small miracle, Code red, St Elsewhere, The six million dollar man, The love boat, Fantasy Island, Potato chips, Silver Spoonsand Baywatchas well as some Betty Crocker commercials.

He was ranked #73 on VH1’s list of the top child stars. He also appeared in the CNN documentary History of the sitcomsaying he was honored in an Instagram post:

“Honored to be included! Thank you CNN,” Rich captioned an Instagram video, in which he can be heard watching the show. “I am grateful for the joy I felt while working on it [Eight Is Enough]! … I really hope it brought you some joy too.”

Rich left show business in the 1980s, having grown tired of the camera and celebrity life. He even took part in a hoax in which he reported his death May magazine in 1996, written by author Dave Eggers, intended to satirize celebrity culture and reporting.

In 1991, Rich was arrested for breaking into a pharmacy window while trying to obtain drugs. Van Patten, who played his television father Eight is enough, saved him. Rich entered rehab, but was arrested again in 2002 when he was charged with drunk driving after nearly hitting a California highway patrol car.

Rich’s closing credits include a cameo appearance in David Spade’s film Dickie Roberts: former child staras well as an episode of Reel comedy as Crocodile Dundee. Both were released in 2003.

There is currently no information on Rich’s survivors. Memorial details are also not available.
