On the eve of my retirement I decided that a new car would be the icing on the cake as I was looking forward to new adventures. I researched several brands and models before deciding on this one 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class.
The main features I liked were: the driving position, which accommodated tall drivers; general fit and finish of the model; All wheel drive; and the badge on the hood.
Having bought several new cars over the years, I have to say that the team at Mercedes have been professional, respectful and attentive in all aspects of the buying process. I was offered free service with a rental car for three years and was invited to the annual golf days which were great.
As a retiree, you have many options for going on vacation by car, and this is where this car excels. It’s very comfortable, fuel efficient and feels solid on the road. The suspension is very firm, which is good on the freeway but not so good on rough back roads, where there are bangs and bumps. I think the run-flat tires are contributing to the problem.
A few years ago we were at the Coffs Harbor Rally event and the 4WD was a real bonus, especially after heavy rain and when we had to drive on dirt/muddy tracks.
I’m not a fan of stop-start technology and am pleased that this car lets you set a custom drive mode to override it. It would be good if you could set this as the default. The positioning of the gear selector switch takes some getting used to. It would be good if it was moved back. All other cabin controls are in accessible places and the media system did not have a touchscreen, but this has now been updated.
The running costs are where you would expect them to be. Brake pads last about 25,000 km and tires about the same. I haven’t had any warranty issues and plan to keep this car for some time.
