One of Taylor Sheridan’s fans’ big questions Yellowstone universe have requested as the first season of prequel series 1923 continues is who exactly is John Dutton III’s character – aka Kevin Costner’s character Yellowstone – grandfather. While it seems like an odd sort of thing to theorize about, events in 1923 have turned the family tree into a kind of question. John Dutton Sr. (James Badge Dale) was murdered in a recent episode and while some fans assume this means his son, Jack (Darren Mann) will then be John II’s father, there’s also theorized that Spencer Dutton (Brandon Sklenar) and his betrothed Alex could become the parents of John II. The question is one that has been much debated among fans and it turns out the cast has too, but Julia Schlaepfer, who plays Alex, has her own theory – she thinks 1923 is consciously building the disclosure.

“It was funny because when we all got to Cowboy Camp, the cast, we were all discussing it,” Schlaepfer said. TV insider. “We were like ‘Who is it? I don’t know.’ And we would pester Taylor all the time with, “Taylor, it has to be this, right? Because this and this and this.” And he’d say, “I don’t know. Honestly, guys, I don’t know.” And we were like, “Sure, you know! You wrote out a family tree somewhere.” But I do think the show is building on that.”

Sklenar has also said that Sheridan has not yet revealed how things are going.

“It’s something that keeps Taylor very close to the vest,” Sklenar said. “I have my own theories, but it needs to be told, written, seen. He always moves all those things.”

Dale had said something similar before, that Sheridan always changes things up, so there’s no way of knowing how it will turn out in the end.

‘I don’t know the tree. We need a flowchart. I’ve seen them online, when people were trying to make them, Dale said. ‘I don’t know if they are correct or not. And here’s the thing, this is Taylor’s universe. We can say one thing or think one thing and Taylor can decide something else and we look at 1942 and realize it’s a little bit different and he’ll change it.

What’s 1923 about?

1923, the next part of the Dutton family origin story, introduces a new generation of Duttons led by Patriarch Jacob (Ford) and Matriarch Cara (Mirren). The series is about the early twentieth century, when pandemics, historic droughts, the end of Prohibition, and the Great Depression all plague the mountain to the west, and the Duttons who call it home.
